Our world depends heavily on the energy created from fossil fuels, but with a cap on the amount of fossil fuels available, the only choice we have to sustain our future would be the global use of alternative energies. “Canada is the fifth largest energy producer in the world and the eighth largest consumer of energy”1. Not all of our energy comes from fossil fuels, but the majority of it does. Fossil fuels coming from coal, crude oil, and natural gas will not be around forever, but alternative energies will be.
Fossil fuels are made up mainly of carbon, which is buried deep below the ground and require risky extraction methods to get them out. The burning of
the fossil fuels “pollutes the air, water, and land”2. When it is burned, the carbon “offsets [the] Earth’s ‘carbon budget’”2. This extra carbon in the atmosphere throws off the greenhouse effect, and warms our planet at a faster rate which creates a new set of global problems. |
It’s time to take a look at Canada’s future with alternative energies. Fossil fuels provide us with everyday energy uses, including gas, electricity, and heating of our homes, but alternative energies can provide us with those everyday uses as well, but at a much lower cost to the environment and to humans economically. It’s said that “Canadians are the fourth largest users of energy per person in the world”1 and in order to keep up with that demand, a renewable source of energy is the only solution to a sustainable future.
